A fantastic opportunity to be coached on clarinet quintet repertoire accompanied by professional string quartets. Work on your own choice of quintets, which could include movements from the quintets by Mozart, Brahms, Weber and other repertoire. Numbers will be limited to ensure adequate playing time with the string quartets. You need to bring Bb and A clarinets to the course and be of Grade 8+ standard. The course is generously funded by the Connie Cottee Clarinet Quintet Weekend Fund. There will be a public recital by the tutors on the Saturday, free to course members.

Study string quartets in an orchestral setting, and overcome technical and musical problems with the benefit of 'safety in numbers'. Develop your sense of rhythm and expand your individual and ensemble skills. Discover the development of pulse and rhythm, from primitive man to the 21st century, and explore African tribal beats, baroque and classical dances, samba drumming, Cuban salsa, swing, Steve Reich and more. Suitable for musicians of all levels, no previous experience necessary. A lot of the rhythms will be done phonetically and any percussion instruments needed will be provided.

Introduced by popular request, this is the perfect follow-on course to Learn to Improvise Jazz, though previous attendance on this is not a requirement. Explore English folk song and music - as a stream running, mixing and flowing through your music making - on this lively, accessible weekend for both singers and instrumentalists. The voicework stream will focus on releasing singing voices and learning some new part songs. There will be some teaching by ear, and if you play an instrument bring it along. Some folk instruments, which might not be so familiar, will also be provided for you to try. The practical and informal sessions are soundly based on the wide knowledge and experience of Paul Wilson; co-founder of Wren Music in Devon and experienced folk artist and teacher.

Be guided through an enjoyable and eclectic range of pieces, ranging from Balkan folk music to Handel sonatas, for recorder and guitar. Working from various source types, including chord symbols, keyboard scores and figured bass, you will go through the process of arranging new pieces; from original score through to performance. Emerge with enhanced playing skills and the confidence to develop your own repertoire. A range of ready-made music for you to play will also be provided. Flutes, lutes and similar instruments are also welcome. For intermediate to advanced players with confident sight-reading skills. Guitarists should familiarise themselves with the bass clef and be able to read and play common chord progressions fluently. Pitch A=440.

30 May - 1 June 2008 (Weekend course)
Be coached in small and large ensembles, and benefit from workshops and masterclasses. A range of mainstream and more unusual repertoire will be available; you can also bring own choice pieces to be worked on with specialist tutors at hand. Bassoonist Kerry Camden will be tutoring throughout the weekend, joined by flute, oboe, clarinet and French horn tutors for a day each. The course is suitable for advanced flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon and French horn players with chamber music experience and good sight-reading ability. Pre-formed quintets will have opportunities to form larger ensembles during the course. As the choice of repertoire will be determined by the final recruitment set works cannot be specified in advance and some sight-reading will be necessary. As a guide of the standard required, a working knowledge of some of the following quintets would be beneficial:
