Tutored by: Sara Stowe
27 - 29 May 2011 (Weekend course)
“This century, like a golden age, has restored to light the liberal arts, which were almost extinct: grammar, poetry, rhetoric, painting, sculpture, architecture, music, the singing of ancient songs to the Orphic lyre, and all this in Florence...” So wrote the Florentine Marsilio Ficino in 1492. Sarah Stowe’s course, designed for singers and for players of any early instruments, including recorders, will explore the diverse range of secular music – much of it by foreigners, and some improvised - that lit up Italian society at this hugely important time. We’ll be playing and singing at modern pitch (A = 440 Hz).
